Somnia - Play it!

So here's that weird unknown game you saw in the not E3 trailer!

Somnia! -the demo-

I hope you can figure it out, if not, there will be much sadness... and me laughing at you secretly.
I'm awfully pleased with how it's turned out, then again since this is the first game I've worked on I don't have much of a frame of reference.

So, thoughts for the final game?

Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

This is the error

Just saw this on the indie games feed and gave it a try. I really like the concept- I had fun playing the demo.

I have two issues with the game:

1. The "glass blocks" that you can stand on in 3D mode but don't cast shadows can be very difficult to see. Maybe they should be framed with something, or a different color, so they're more visible.

2. A lot of the stages seem to require trial-and-error blind jumps, which bothers me- the stage with the giant wall in it in particular comes to mind (I think it's stage 3 or 4?). I feel like these need to either be redesigned or the jumps need to get a lot more forgiving than they are right now.

It's fun, though, and I'm looking forward to the full version!

Yes, I'm really a girl - the game.
The goal is to tell people you're female without it taking over the whole discussion. (really high difficulty level)

Wow, that's a really original and well done game! Loved it

I loved the demo. I hope to see more. Maybe on Steam? I would pay for it! Great game <3~

I think this is an awesome and original game idea. I'm getting into game design, but I haven't decided to try 3D yet. This is a pretty fun blend of 2D and 3D.

I'm really enjoying it so far...
But I think changing the name from "Somnia!" to just "somnia" would work better with the mood that the game projects...

I loved that demo! Keep the trial and error. It makes for fun discovery.

Ignore Hamilton, the trial and error makes the game more interesting and adds a discovery element.

Also, I had no problem with the "glass blocks". I loved the concept of the block you could move while in shadow form.

cool game :D. Really enjoyed that.

I personally would like to see some more colour work in the game, it feels very dead right now, not an enviroment i enjoyed being in. I know the game relies on shadows but that doesnt meant he whole world has to be grey. Throw some cools into the shadows and try some interesting stuff imo.

Another thing that confused me is why the normal maps are a relativly high resolution yet the meshes so damn low poly? I doubt you would notice any slow downs at 3 times the poly count on any of those objects. I say smooth out those meshes, and if you can afford it put some bevels on those boxes.

Good to hear you guys get it, we are planning on doing a full version but since I'm working on 10 games simultaneosly right now it might take some time.

very nice, I liked it! The puzzles are a bit simple and/or guess and check though, but still, I can't wait to see more. Also, maybe have a border around the edge of the landscape and be able to see your character's arms and feet while in 3D? Also, who made the music?

Looks good, but I struggle to play it due to a lack of an 'invery mouse y axis' option.

I enjoyed the puzzles in this, but I think the graphics could be tweaked a bit. Things like how the glass blocks are hard to see; as Hamilton already pointed out. And I have no idea what was going on in level six, with the glowing block? It moved? Reading the comments here tells me I can push it in the shadow zone, and that must be what happened, but it was confusing.
The full game could stand to use a longer tutorial, to explain how these mechanics work.

I liked the basic idea, but sometimes the gates to each puzzle only work if you look at them just right. However, the puzzles were challenging, and satisfying, generally. I finished all 6 of the demo levels, and I am excited to see the finished product.

Aimee,

After playing around in the demo for a couple of minutes, I have to say that the game play mechanic is so novel, and intuitive to boot.

The only complaint that I can raise so far is that there isn't any way to invert the y-axis on the mouse.

Other than that, it is fantastic, and can't wait to see the execution of the idea completed.

Very cool! I can't wait for a longer version!

I see this is a common thread through the comments so I thought I'd mention in the next version of Somnia there will be an
Invert Y Axis

The installation fails for me on XP. (This isn't a Vista-only product, I hope.) I launch the installer, nothing happens. Yes, I tried downloading a second time.

Fun game. The graphics were very dark (in 3D mode), though, which made it hard to make out a number of details. I agree with the person who suggested that the F1 screen should be clued somewhere - who presses F1 these days? ;)

To the person confused about the "light block": When you stand on it, it moves the light source to directly above it. This means that the relative positions of a number of things in shadow world move around, while staying exactly where they are in 3D world. It's quite nifty.

I kept wanting to find a way to climb on the floating cubes in the distance... hope there's something like that in the full game. :)

I don't mind the blind jumps - it's not like a fall damages you in shadow world (or in 3D world for that matter). I did find it very hard to see the glass blocks, though, which meant the final part of demo level 6 was more trial-and-error than figure-it-out.

One final note: the glowing thing on demo level 6 was an "IX"/"XI" rather than a "VI" :-)

Nice innovative game!

Brilliant idea and fairly well executed. Perhaps a bit of work on acceleration while in 3D... other than that, this is awesome.
